Job title: Winds Retrieval (atmospheric motion vectors) Engineering Service

Customer: EUMETSAT (European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites)

Location of work: Darmstadt, Germany

In addition to having a University degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline such as computer science, physics, mathematics or remote sensing, the key person shall have a minimum of three years of experience in software engineering for operational processing of satellite or meteorological data.


The key person shall also possess the mandatory skills described in the following sections;


  • Scientific computing
  • Demonstrated skills in a higher programming language (e.g., C++, Fortran…)
  • Excellent interpersonal and team-working skills
  • Fluency in English is mandatory (This is the working language at EUMETSAT, and the person must be able to work effectively in this language.)


In addition to the mandatory skills, sound knowledge and demonstrated ability covering any of the following would be an advantage:


  • Demonstrated skills in Java programming
  • Knowledge of atmospheric and/or meteorology
  • Demonstrated knowledge of physics of optical remote sensing of the atmosphere, especially for winds retrieval and/or clouds
  • Experience with the development of modular, clearly readable and adaptable scientific software is required, including the configuration control of the developed codes
  • Experience in the visualization of remote sensing data using specific tools or programming languages (e.g. Python)
  • Experience in scientific data analysis
  • Communication skills, especially through scientific peer-review papers, international working groups and workshops
  • Knowledge of the most relevant imagery missions for atmospheric products, including their products and applications
  • Experience in operational satellite data processing systems
  • Experience in the maintenance of processors in the context of operational missions
  • Experience in the validation of geophysical parameters derived from space-borne sensors through in-situ measurements and cross-comparisons
