Job title: Cloud and Related Products Engineering Service

Customer: EUMETSAT (European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites)

In addition to having a University degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline such as computer science, physics, mathematics or remote sensing, the key person shall have a minimum of three years’ experience in software engineering for operational processing of satellite or meteorological data.


The key person shall also possess the mandatory skills described in the following sections;


  • Demonstrated skills in a higher programming language (e.g., C++, Fortran…)
  • Excellent interpersonal and team-working skills
  • Fluency in English is mandatory (This is the working language at EUMETSAT, and the SLM as well as all key persons from the service team must be able to work effectively in this language.)


In addition to the mandatory skills, a sound knowledge and demonstrated ability covering any of the following will be an advantage:


  • Demonstrated skills in Java programming
  • Demonstrated knowledge of physics of optical remote sensing of the atmosphere, especially for cloud and/or aerosol properties, including experience in the use of radiative transfer models
  • Experience with the development of modular, clearly readable and adaptable scientific software is required, including the configuration control of the developed codes
  • Experience on the visualization of remote sensing data using specific tools or programming languages (Python, IDL…)
  • Experience in scientific analysis, especially on remote sensing of cloud or atmosphere from space, including the experience of prototyping algorithms or any related testing functions.
  • Communication skills, especially through scientific peer-review papers, international working groups and workshops
  • Knowledge of the most relevant imagery missions for atmospheric products, including their products, and applications
  • Experience of operational satellite data processing systems
  • Experience on the maintenance of processors in the context of operational missions
  • Knowledge on instrument calibration and characterization including long-term monitoring and validation of the performance
  • Knowledge of the functioning, operation, and data processing of multi-viewing, multiploidization, multi-spectral imaging instruments, or any similar polarimetric mission
  • Experience on the validation of cloud parameters derived from space-borne sensors through in-situ measurements and cross-comparisons
  • Experience on polarimetry for aerosol retrieval or the level-1 processing of polarimeter (including calibration)
