Meteorological Products Software Engineer [Deadline: 12 Apr 2016]

The tasks of the Key person will include:

  • Analysis of product change proposals
  • Design, implementation and validation of updated/new algorithms
  • Documentation of changes related to product updates
  • Preparation of technical notes on product implementation issues
  • Development, maintenance and update of product generation monitoring software and the corresponding database
  • Monitoring and operating the product generation facilities
  • Visualisation and analysis of geophysical products


In addition to having a University degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, such as computer science, physics, mathematics or remote sensing, the Consultant shall have minimum of 5 years of experience in operational product generation from satellite/remote sensing data. In addition, experience in validation of geophysical products from satellite data is highly desirable.

Specifically the key person shall have:

  • Algorithm software development using FORTRAN 90/95 Intel/GNU/Linux and/or IBM/POWER/AIX environments
  • Implementation of scientific algorithms from a given specification and their documentation
  • Source code control systems: Subversion and/or git
  • Anomaly correction processes
  • Python and IDL programming languages
  • Common meteorological data formats, i.e., BUFR, CAP, GRIB, HDF5, and netCDF
  • Authoring clear and concise technical documentation

The following areas of expertise would be an advantage:

  • Algorithm software development using C++/C programming language
  • The operating systems: GNU/Linux and AIX
  • Relational databases using SQL
